AFS Corporate Member AB&I Foundry (Oakland, California), which makes cast iron pipe and fittings for the plumbing industry, received positive news from California Air Resources Board (CARB) report July 10. The U.S. Department of Energy has given its 2020 Better Project award to Waupaca, Wisconsin-based Waupaca Foundry, an AFS Corporate Member, as part of the agency’s Better Plants program that recognizes manufacturers for creating and implementing industrial energy and water efficiency projects, as well as renewable energy and energy resiliency projects.

Private equity firm, Oakland Standard Company, announced Damascus Steel Casting Company has joined Temperform and The C.A. Lawton Co. in its specialty metals platform.
Damascus Steel, founded in 1906, supplies high-performance steel castings to a variety of industries. The company proves low to medium volume shell mold castings from concept to finished product, which “aligns with the engineered castings approach of the platform,” according to a press release.
AFS Corporate Member Benton Foundry (Benton, Pennsylvania) will be expanding its iron casting operations over the next three years, creating at least 40 new jobs, according to an announcement from Pennsylvania Governor Tom Wolf. Roughly 80,000 sq.ft. of manufacturing space will either be added, replaced or repurposed in the $21 million investment.
Tesla has filed another patent applicaiton to do with a metalcasting invention, this time for aluminum diecasting alloys. Last summer, it was published that the company had filed a patent application for a "multidirectional unibody casting machine for a vehicle frame and associated methods."
