High pressure die cast magnesium offers high strength-to-weight ratio, stiffness, ductility and durability with better dimensional accuracy, surface finish and near net shaped features than comparable steel fabrications and stampings. In this case study, two major structural components originally consisting of steel K-brace and aluminum extrusions were redesigned and manufactured as one large cast magnesium design by Meridian Lightweight Technologies (Strathroy, Ontario, Canada) and Ford Motor Co. (Dearborn, Michigan).The new design resulted in a 50% weight reduction.
